Russell E. Vance, Jr., 89, of Erie, died Monday, August 6, 2012 at VAMC Erie. He was born in Rensselaer, Indiana on November 17, 1922. Son of the late Russell E. and Ruth N. Golder Vance.
He served with the armored infantry of the 10th armored division in WWII, and received the ETO (four battle stars), bronze star and purple heart.
Russell was a member of the St Patricks Church in Erie; the Irish Cultural Society of Erie County; Conradh na Gaeilge; American Conference for Irish Study; the American Irish Cultural Institute and was a Knight of St. Patrick.
Professor Emeritus from Edinboro University, he taught history at Allegheny College from 1957-1967 when he came to Edinboro. Russell retired, January 1988.
Survivors include his son, Dr. Russell E. Vance, III; grandchildren; Kelly F.; Deirdre M.; Michael P.; Russell E. IV; and eight great grandchildren.
Friends may call at the Glunt Funeral Home, 210 Erie Street, Edinboro, on Wednesday from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.. A service will be held there on Thursday at 11:00 a.m. with Dr. James Drane officiating.
Burial will be in Edinboro Cemetery, with U.S. Army Military Honors assisted by Erie Crawford County Burial Detail.
