Robert Eugene Matthews, 76, of Meadville St., Edinboro, PA, died unexpectedly on Friday November 12th, 2010 at Hamot Medical Center in Erie. He was born in Akron, Ohio on March 10, 1934, the son of the late John and Mary Quittschreiber Matthews.
He retired as a music professor from the Edinboro University of Pennsylvania. He received his undergraduate degree from the University of Akron and received his Master’s Degree from Columbia University. During his teaching and musical career he received numerous professional awards.
Mr. Matthews was a member of many professional, civic, and volunteer organizations including Kiwanis Club, Zem Zem Shrine Band, American Musicological Society, American Federation of Musicians Local 17, and the American Recorder Society. Mr. Matthews also provided private music lessons to many children and adults.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Margaret Nimer Matthews in 2009; and also a brother, Jack Matthews.
Survivors include two daughters, Sheri Shields and her husband, Bryan, of Akron, OH, and Teresa Graham of Woodbridge, VA; a sister, Mary McKinney of Barberton, OH; also five grandchildren; Christine Munoz (Victor), Casey Graham, Brandon Shields, Carol Graham, and Bradley Shields and one great granddaughter Victoria Munoz along with several nieces and nephews.
Friends may call at the Glunt Funeral Home, 210 Erie Street, Edinboro, on Sunday from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. and 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. A service will be held there on Monday, November 22, 2010 at 10:00 a.m. with Rev. Duane Pinney officiating.
Burial will be in Mt. Peace Cemetery in Akron, OH. In lieu of flowers the family has requested that memorials may be made to Washington Valley Christian Church, 1771 Conneauttee Rd, Cambridge Springs, PA 16403, or to the Shriner’s Hospital for Children, 1645 W. 8th Street, Erie, PA 16505.
