Ralph C. Zindel, Jr., age 89, of Edinboro, passed away Saturday, November 10, 2012 surrounded by his wife and loving family at home. He was born June 8, 1923 in Flushing, NY, the son of the late Ralph and Lenore (Gillespie) Zindel. A longtime resident of Edinboro, Ralph was a 1952 graduate of the Edinboro State Teachers College and received his Masters degree from Westminster College.
Ralph was a teacher of many things and educated many students teaching Physics and Chemistry in Titusville, Fairview, Cambridge Springs, and General McLane High Schools for over 28 years.
Ralph achieved the rank of Staff Sergeant, serving three years with Company I 334th Infantry Regiment, 84th Infantry Division “Railsplitters” where he was awarded a Bronze Star for bravery under fire on February 26, 1945 in Boisheim, Germany. In addition to an individual Bronze Star, Ralph and his unit received three unit Bronze Stars for combat under fire in the Rhineland, Ardennes-Alsace, and Central Europe including The Battle of the Bulge.
Ralph also owned and operated R. C. Zindel & Son Hardware store in Edinboro for over 40 years, where his motto was “if you can find it, we can sell it.”
He was a member and Past Master of the Oasis Lodge No. 416 F. & A.M., a Lifetime member of the Edinboro Volunteer Fire Department, and a member of the Edinboro United Methodist Church.
Besides his parents, Ralph was preceded in death by his sister Doris Zindel. Ralph is survived by his loving wife of 65 years, Marion Zindel (Biby), two sons Alan Zindel and David Zindel, and his five grandchildren, Brandy Seagren and husband Matt, Brook Zindel-Link and husband Chris, Jacob Zindel and wife Amanda, Greta Zindel and Luke Zindel. Ralph was also loved by five great-grandchildren, Skyler Link, Monica Link, Maguire Link, Connor Zindel, and Cailyn Zindel.
Due to family health issues, visitations will not be observed, however the family asks that condolences be shared via mail to Marion Zindel, 109 Sherwood Drive, Edinboro, PA, 16412 or via the guestbook on www.GoErie.com and www.gluntfuneralhome.com.
