Marian “Kay” Jones Spiller, 62, died Wednesday morning, February 1, at home in Edinboro. She leaves behind her husband, Ron, daughter and son-in-law Elizabeth and Marty Roper of Houston, daughter Sharon of Erie and brother and sister-in-law James and Brenda Bomar of Houston.
She was a graduate of Brazosport High School in Freeport, Texas and Stephen F. Austin State University in Nacogdoches, Texas. Kay was a fourth generation Texan and eleventh generation Southerner and moved to Edinboro in 1996 when her husband became a member of the Edinboro University faculty. Having spent her childhood on the Gulf Coast and survived several major hurricanes, particularly Carla in 1961, she was quite happy to exchange the vagaries of hurricane season for the certainty of snow in the Boro. She had no plans to exchange four seasons for the heat and humidity of a southern retirement. Until she was diagnosed with inoperable cancer she was an active member of the Edinboro Planning Commission.
In addition to her family she leaves behind a large number of friends who have been of unwavering support during her illness. For these friends her family is tremendously grateful. The family would also like to thank the staff of SouthernCare Hospice in Meadville and the faculty and students of the Nursing Department at Edinboro University. Their professionalism and unstinting support and care are deeply appreciated by the family.
A memorial service for Kay will be held at the Glunt Funeral Home, 210 Erie Street, Edinboro, on Sunday, February 5, at 2:00 pm with Rev. Joe Kaufer Officiating. In lieu of flowers the family would appreciate your contribution to the American Cancer Society, 2115 West 38th Street, Erie, PA 16508-1999.
