John Wonner

John Fleischer Wonner, 92, of McKean, died Wednesday, June 26, 2024 at UPMC Hamot. He was born in Wattsburg, PA on June 1, 1932, the son of the late John and Susanna Wonner.

John (Jack) attended school in Wattsburg and spent his youth in the activities of the family farm. Prior to his senior year of high school, the Wonner family relocated to McKean, where Jack attended McKean High School, graduating in 1950.

Jack entered the Army in 1952 and served in Korea as a firefighter. He enjoyed the people of Korea and corresponded with friends for years. He was awarded several decorations for his service.

Following his military discharge, Jack worked as a machine operator in Hammermill Paper Company. He retired early to pursue his love of the outdoors and agrarian pursuits, working at a nursery and at a farm.

Throughout his life, Jack was an active member of Lutheran churches and was a current member of Abiding Hope Lutheran Church. He also became a poet, attending Erie poetry groups, conferences, and Chautauqua Institute classes. Jack became guardian to nephew William McDivitt and niece Kathleen Visniesky, raising them through their high school years

He was preceded in death by his parents, sister Charlotte Rosenberg, sister Pauline Devlin, and niece Kathleen Visniesky.

Survivors include his loving wife of 39 years, Marjorie; sister, Susanne Makay; nephew, William McDivitt; and step-children, Virginia Keehn of Milwaukee, Wisconsin, Thomas Davies, and Barbara Kendall of Dallas, Texas.

Friends may call at the Glunt Funeral Home and Crematory, Inc., 210 Erie St, Edinboro, on Monday, July 1, 2024 from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. A service will be held on Tuesday, July 2, 2024 at Abiding Hope Lutheran Church, 2402 W. Grandview Blvd., Erie, PA 16506 at 10:00 am.

Burial will be in Valley Cemetery (Dunn Valley) in McKean. Memorials may be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital at www.stjude.org.
