John “Jack” H. Camphire, 84, of Edinboro, formerly of Pittsburgh, died Monday, August 5, 2024 at his home surrounded by his loving family and friends. He was born in Pittsburgh on June 30, 1940, the son of the late Arthur and Violet Camphire.

Jack graduated from Central Catholic High School in Pittsburgh and attended Duquesne University. He owned and operated the Great Scot restaurant in Pittsburgh, PA, which then became The Union Grill. He served in the US Army Reserves during the Vietnam Era. Jack had a passion for gourmet cooking, creating adventure, and the rural landscape of northwestern PA. 

A restaurateur for the majority of his career, his creativity expressed through his cooking brought joy to friends both old and new.

Jack was a sharp dressed man and a consummate gentleman. He created opportunities for people. He helped those in need. He told elaborate stories. He hosted huge gatherings where there was always room for one more at the table. He made others laugh with his deadpan humor and razor-sharp wit. He loved to exceed expectations and inspired those who loved him as a result. He forged innumerable lasting friendships.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Camphire in 2018; also, a brother, Bob (Alma) Camphire.

Survivors include two daughters, Beth (Tom) Ryan and Lynn Walter, all of Chicago, IL; three sons, Jack (Kathy) Camphire of Waterford, PA, Michael Camphire of Houston, TX, and Bryan (Lauren) Camphire of Austin, TX; a brother, Tom (Maureen) Camphire of St. Petersburg, FL; also, three grandchildren, Chris (Emma) Walter and Shannon (Dominic) Stocchetti, and Myrna Camphire.

 A Memorial Mass will be held at St. Anthony of Padua Catholic Church, 165 Beach Ave, Cambridge Springs, PA on Saturday, August 10, 2024 at 10:00 a.m. The Glunt Funeral Home and Crematory, Inc., Edinboro, oversees funeral arrangements.

Memorials may be made to Amedisys/AseraCare Hospice or Pulmonary Fibrosis Foundation.
