John George Berger, 76, of Edinboro, passed away peacefully at home with his loving wife of nearly 52 years at his side following a courageous battle with cancer. He was born in Pittsburgh on February 9, 1941, the son of the late John and Clara Berger.
John graduated from Edinboro High School in 1959. He cherished his many friendships made in high school and throughout his life. He was blessed to have a second “mother” in Jennie Schruers who welcomed him into her home. During that time, he worked for the Schruers family dairy located on Kinter Hill Road. Following high school, he completed his degree at Edinboro State College and then began working at the Erie County Department of Health. He later started his own successful painting business that he owned and operated until retirement. John will also be remembered as the President of the Edinboro Volunteer Fire Department for many years, and for managing the ski rental shop at Mount Pleasant. Following his retirement in 2007, John became very active in the Erie County Sportsmen's League trap club.
John enjoyed watching baseball with his sons and grandsons, solving Sudoku puzzles, fishing, hunting, attending his grandkids’ sporting events, and keeping his pool clean and ready for all to enjoy.
He was predeceased by his twin sister, Ethel Wampole.
Survivors include the love of his life, wife Kathleen Foulkrod Berger; three sons: Brian Berger of Wexford, Pa, Brent Berger of Edinboro and his wife Amy Kibbee Berger, and Bill Berger of Edinboro and his wife Jennifer Renn Berger; nephew: Arthur Wampole of Oveido, Florida, his wife Jill Wampole and sons Tyler and Matt; and 9 grandchildren: Zane, Kyle, Emily, Kaley, Sydney, PJ, Teige, Megan, and Kelsey.
The family would like to extend a special thank you to the nurses at St. Vincent Infusion Center and Kathy at the Regional Cancer Center for making him feel like their favorite patient. The Berger family was overwhelmed with the love and support they received from friends and family during his last few weeks.
Friends may call at the Glunt Funeral Home and Crematory, Inc., 210 Erie Street, Edinboro, on Friday, June 30, 2017 from 3 to 6 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Edinboro Volunteer Fire Department or the Erie County Sportsman's League, 1388 Lane Road, Waterford, PA 16441.
