James Brian McKay, PhD., 75, of Edinboro, PA passed away on October 26, 2015 at Saint Vincent Hospital from heart failure. Born in Uniontown, PA, he was the son of the late Rose Wahler McKay and James Gordon McKay.
Brian graduated from Camden Catholic High School in Camden, New Jersey; received a BS in Chemistry from Philadelphia College of Pharmacy and Science; and received a Masters and Doctorate in Analytical Chemistry from Wayne State University.
Brian was a Professor of Chemistry at University of Connecticut from 1966 through 1972 and a Professor of Chemistry at Edinboro University from 1972 until his retirement in 2007, chairing the Chemistry Department for fifteen years, serving on committees, advising students, repairing instruments, and being an active member of the American Chemical Society.
Brian was an active member of Our Lady of the Lake Parish, in Edinboro and sang in the parish choirs.
He enjoyed music, concerts, traveling, visiting National Parks and Monuments, hiking, watching sunsets, and solving all the puzzles in the daily paper.
Brian is survived by his devoted wife of fifty years, Daria (Turula) McKay; their three daughters, Anne (Jeffery) Locke of Liverpool, NY, Kate (Leslie) Brown of Evergreen, CO, and Stephanie (Patrick) Hargest of Edinboro; their two sons, Timothy (Emily) McKay of Flagstaff, AZ and Andrew (Dawn) McKay of McHenry, IL; seven grandchildren, Sean Locke, McKayla Hargest, Evan McKay, Aidan Hargest, Anabelle McKay, Lily McKay and Jackson McKay; his sister, Regina (Robert) Armswood; also, many nieces and nephews.
The family would like to thank Dr. William Getson, Edinboro Volunteer Fire Department, Central Erie County Paramedics Association and Saint Vincent Hospital Medical and Intensive Care staff for many years of care and support.
Friends may call at the Glunt Funeral Home and Crematory, Inc., 210 Erie Street, Edinboro, on Thursday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Friday, October 30, at Our Lady of the Lake Church at 11:00 a.m. with Fr. Daniel Hoffman officiating.
Burial will be in Edinboro Cemetery.
