George H. Stair, Jr. of Erie passed away peacefully at LECOM Senior Living Center on June 4, 2024. He was 77. Born in Harrisburg, PA, George was the beloved son of the late George and Susan Stair.

Known for his towering height and strapping frame, George stood out easily in a crowd. He was a student athlete at Bishop McDevitt High School before playing football at Indiana University of Pennsylvania. There, he was on the team that competed in the nation’s first indoor NCAA Championship Game in 1968. Two years later, he graduated from IUP with a degree in accounting.

After college, George proudly served his country stateside at Fort Meyers, VA and the Pentagon. He got married and had two sons. In 1975, he started a long civilian career at the Naval Audit Service, where he served in numerous roles at the former Naval Supply Depot in Mechanicsburg, PA for over 25 years. George retired in 2002.

During his life, George was a dedicated father, a devout Catholic, and avid fan of the Pittsburgh Steelers and Notre Dame Fighting Irish. He was a long-time member of Holy Name of Jesus parish in Harrisburg, where he frequently volunteered, and was a Fourth Degree Knights of Columbus in Council #14081. During the holidays, George could often be found at local craft fairs selling his homemade old fashioned Clear Toy Candy, a tradition he picked up from his father.

After retirement, George travelled and often volunteered at Holy Spirit Heart Center and Lower Paxton Senior Van. Sadly, George’s final years were marked by a constant string of health problems that steadily debilitated and isolated him from the family and friends he cared about.

George was preceded in death by a brother, William Stair. He is survived by his second wife of 32 years, Barbara; his sons, Trevor and Brian; his stepchildren, Amy (Vance) Row and Eric (Rebecca) Schauffele; sisters, Carol Strencosky and Phyllis (William) Simpson; two grandchildren, Warren and Finnegan Schauffele; and several nieces and nephews.

The Glunt Funeral Home and Crematory, Inc., Edinboro has been entrusted with arrangements. Memorial service information will be posted soon. Please visit www.gluntfuneralhome.com for details, or to leave condolences.

In appreciation of the men and women who helped make George’s final years as comfortable as possible, donations may be made to the AAPACN Education Foundation (American Association of Post-Acute Care Nursing) at (bit.ly/georgestair)
