Genevieve Gertrude (Pitkat) Murphy, 65, of Edinboro died Monday, October 3, 2016 at St. Vincent Hospital. She was born in Mt. Kisco, NY; on January 7, 1951, the daughter of the late Robert and Shirley (Cunningham) Pitkat.
Genevieve was an educator, a mother, and a grandmother. She was a graduate of the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York, NY. She later attended SUNY at Brockport with a BA in Theater Arts and earned her master’s degree in Special Education at Edinboro State University. She made her career as an educator, working at the Northwest Tri-county Intermediate Unit for over 30 years. She retired in 2013 and has since enjoyed spending as much time as possible with her family.
Genevieve was one of the lucky few that went to Woodstock! She hated it. She remained inspired, however, by the arts and – besides her family – enjoyed nothing more than a good book and cup of tea (except perhaps football - the Bills). Genevieve had many interests and cared deeply about a great many things, but she had no greater passion in life than taking care of her children.
Above all, Genevieve was a strong and caring woman who will be remembered for her unconditional love, generosity, and Irish sense of humor and strong will. Family meant the world to her. Whether it meant traveling thousands of miles to see her sister, aunt and parents, or almost weekly trips to see her children and grandchildren in New York, very little got in the way of her time with her family. Most of all, she cherished being with her husband, children, and wonderful granddaughters. She will be missed forever.
She was preceded in death by her brother, Robert B. Pitkat. Survivors include her husband of 42 years, Charles G. Murphy; a daughter, Catherine Mary-Elizabeth Murphy; a son, Daniel Edward Murphy and wife Anne Montminy, all of Brooklyn, NY; 3 granddaughters; Genevieve Montminy Murphy, Olivia Rachel Goldman and Noa Montminy Goldman; a sister, Catherine Barge and husband John Barge; a brother, Joseph Pitkat; and an aunt, Mary (Cunningham) Hogan and partner Elva Martinez. She is additionally survived by numerous nieces and nephews, all loved by Gen.
