Frederick John Caro Sr., age 75, formerly of Edinboro, died peacefully on Wednesday, April 27, 2011, at his home in Erie after a long, arduous battle with cancer. Fred was born in Springdale, PA on April 20, 1936 and he was the proud son of Johanna Gilliam-Caro (age 99) and the late Joseph Caro.
Fred was a 1954 graduate of Springdale High School and a later graduate of Lock Haven State Teachers College, where he earned his Bachelor of Science degree in Health Education. He continued his education at Eastern Michigan University, The University of Pittsburgh and at Springfield College in Springfield, MA, where he received his Master of Science degree in Physical Education.
Fred was an outstanding athlete and coach who achieved great success. His credentials are numerous. He was a collegiate athlete in the sports of track, football and wrestling. He was the Captain of the 1957 undefeated and untied football team / PA conference champion at Lock Haven State Teachers College and received All-State and Little All-American honors in football.
In 1963, after teaching and coaching at the high school level, Fred decided to become a college professor and head wrestling, assistant football, and assistant track coach at Edinboro State College for 36 years until his retirement in 1999. Fred was the head wrestling coach from 1963 until 1984, where he became known as “coach” to many athletes and students who would continue to become meaningful, life-long friends over the many years. In 1977 Fred was selected to be the national coach / team leader for the AAU / NAIA wrestling tour to Japan and South Korea. Over the years he has been inducted into numerous athletic Hall of Fames, including some at the national level.
Fred proudly served the local community through his ten years of service on the General McLane School Board where he also served, in-part, as President. He actively served two years on the Erie County Vocational / Technical School Board. Fred enjoyed supporting local sporting events over the years, including; serving as a Little League baseball umpire and officiating junior wrestling and high school wrestling throughout Erie County.
Fred was a very special son, brother, athlete, friend, teacher, coach, father, grandfather, and, more recently, great-grandfather. Family members who mourn his loss, yet celebrate his life, include: his mother Johanna Gilliam-Caro; three siblings: J. Daniel Caro and wife Joan of Harwick, PA, James Caro and wife Patricia of Blawnox, PA, Patricia Currieri-Collins and husband Joseph of TN; six beloved children: Rebecca Dickson and husband Walter of SC, Jennifer Barr and Jerry of Allentown, PA, Frederick Jr. and wife Jennifer of Waterford, PA, Melissa and partner Carrie of MD, Mathew and wife Audra of Edinboro, PA, Michael and Paige of Erie, PA, their mother Anna Caro of Edinboro, PA; ten beloved grandchildren: Ryan Dickson and wife Sara, Lauren Dickson, Amy Dickson, Megan Weidman-Ford and husband Brian, Bethany Weidman, Nicholas Weidman, Tyler Caro, Beau Caro, Mathew Caro Jr., Joshua Caro; one beloved great-grandson: Charlie Ford; two stepchildren: Anthony Lucarotti and wife Jennifer of Erie, PA, Andrea Williamson of Erie, PA, their mother Carol Caro; four step-grandchildren: Alexa Williamson, Michael Lucarotti, Ryan Lucarotti, Ava Lucarotti.
The family would like to acknowledge and express their deep appreciation to everyone who helped assist with Fred’s care over the years – most especially the Erie Regional Cancer Center and the Visiting Nurses Association (VNA). Their professional, yet compassionate, assistance afforded Fred the ability to enjoy quality time with his family up until the moment of his passing – including a recent and beautiful Easter weekend celebration.

A service will be held at the Our Lady of Victory Parish, 1319 Low Grade Road, Harwick, PA on Tuesday at 10:00 a.m. with a burial to follow in Deer Creek Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Fred J. Caro Football Captain Leadership Scholarship (Lock Haven University Foundation) or the Coach Fred J.
