Elizabeth "Tib" Young Hughes, 100, of Meadville, formerly of Edinboro , died Tuesday, June 13,2017 at Wesbury United Methodist Community. She was born in Albion on April 29, 1917, the daughter of Chester and Annie Harrington.
She attended Albion public schools, graduating in 1935, attended Edinboro State College (now Edinboro University) and taught in Conneaut Twp schools.
In 1944, Tibby and her husband Williard moved to Edinboro to the house they built on Plum Street, ten years later building a home in Washington Twp. During her 40 years in the Edinboro area, she was an active member in many community organizations, including the Edinboro United Methodist Church where she held several offices on the Council of Ministries and the United Methodist Women. She was involved in girl scouting for 23 years as a Troop Leader, Neighborhood Chairman, and Troop Consultant; a member of the Town and Country Garden Club; an honorary member of the Edinboro Historical Society; the Order of the Eastern Star; Daughters of the Nile; the Heather Club and a member of the General McLane School Board, serving several years on the Long Range Planning Committee of the school. She was employed from 1970 to 1974 by Penn State University as a nutritional Aide in the expanded Nutritional Education Program in Western Erie County. Tibby enjoyed spending her free time reading, working crossword puzzles, challenging friends and family to a scrabble game or a game of cards and when the opportunity arose, bird watching.
Elizabeth continued her life of service to the community at Wesbury, where she lived for 21 years. She enjoyed her life there, making many friends with the residence and staff. She will be greatly missed by family and friends.
Tibby sadly lost her husband Williard in 1975. She latter married Floyd Hughes and gained a daughter, Nancy (Ray) Cheers and four granddaughters.
Other than her parents, and first husband, Williard, she is preceded in death by her second husband, Floyd Hughes in 1991, her step-daughter, Nancy Cheers in 2015 a sister, Hazel Vaught and two brothers, Chester and George Harrington.
Survivors include five children, Janet (Barry) Bischoff of Edinboro, Nancy Klemm of Oil City, Richard (Martha) Young of Richardson, Texas, Carol Rein of Columbus, Ohio and the Rev. James (Kathy) Young of Baden, Pa.; a step- son-in- law, Raymond Cheers of Mentor, Ohio, a sister: Mary Ann (Frank) Smith of Waynesboro, Pa; also thirteen grandchildren, fifteen great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
A short gathering will be on Saturday, June 17, 2017, at Cribbs Chapel, 31 North Park Ave, Meadville at 1:00 pm followed by a memorial service at 2:00 pm. An Eastern Star ceremony will be held just before the memorial service begins.
The Glunt Funeral Home and Crematory, Inc., Edinboro, is in charge of funeral arrangements.
Burial of ashes will be in Edinboro Cemetery at family's discretion. Memorials may be made to Wesbury Foundation, 31 N. Park Ave., Meadville, PA 16335, Edinboro United Methodist Church, 113 High St., Edinboro, or the Girl Scouts of Western PA, 5681 Rt. 6N, Edinboro, PA 16412.
