Dorothy G. Ickes, 103, of Edinboro, was called home on April 4, 2025. Dorothy was born at home in Imler, PA on December 2, 1921, the daughter of the late Stella Kathryn and Sewell Exline.
She graduated from Bedford High School in 1938 and from Hammond School of Beauty Culture in Altoona, PA in 1940. She married Curtis L. Ickes, her high school sweetheart, on October 25, 1945 when he came home from WWII. They celebrated 57 years of marriage together before his death in 2003. Dorothy owned and operated Dottie’s Beauty Shop in Imler, PA until they moved to Kane, PA for Curt's first teaching position in 1947, then moving to Edinboro in 1957 when Curt started a new position teaching math at Edinboro State College. Dorothy was instrumental in organizing and was the first president of the college's Faculty Wives.
She bowled in many bowling leagues in Edinboro over the years and was very active in the churches she attended: St. Paul’s Evangelical Lutheran Church in Drakes Mills, PA, First Lutheran Church of Edinboro and most recently St. Augustine of Canterbury Episcopal Church. She sang in the choir at all three churches.
Dorothy and Curt traveled extensively in the U.S., Canada, and Europe before his death and enjoyed their winter home in Bonita Springs, FL for over 25 years where she was active in the Belles of Harmony singing group.
In addition to her parents and husband, Dorothy was predeceased by her sister, Josephine Parisi and brother, Clarence Donald Exline.
Dorothy is survived by two sons: Donald and his wife, Susan, of Edinboro, and Richard and his wife, Susan, of Smith Mountain Lake, VA. She is also survived by five grandchildren: David (Claire) of Fogelsville, PA, Jeremy (Kristen) of Breckenridge, CO, Michael (Holly) of Edinboro, PA, Scott (Jane) of Williamsburg, VA, and Amanda Wiseman of Thornton, CO. She is further survived by nine great grandchildren: Timothy, Catherine, Dorothy, Kieran, Miles, Gracie, and James Ickes, Oscar and Hadley Wiseman, and many nieces and nephews.
She will always be affectionately remembered by them for her peanut butter balls and baked apples at Thanksgiving and Christmas, but more importantly for her faith in God and her love for family who will remember her for the unconditional love and support she gave them as they grew into the people they are today.
The family would like to especially thank the staff at Edinboro Manor who lovingly cared for Dorothy the past five years. She was a favorite of many of them, and they made her feel like she was part of a family.
Friends may call on Saturday, April 12 from 9am to 11am at St. Augustine of Canterbury Episcopal Church, Edinboro. A service will follow there at 11am. Burial will be in the Edinboro Cemetery following the service. Attendees are welcome to join the family for a luncheon to follow the burial.
