C. Raymond “Ray” Zimmer, 90, of Edinboro, passed away on Tuesday, May 2, 2017 at his home. He was born in Edinboro on June 12, 1926, the son of the late Claude and Mabel (Satterlee) Zimmer.
Ray graduated from Edinboro High School in 1944 and later from Erie Business College where he met and later married F. Joanne Kane in 1948. They were happily married for 57 years until her sudden death in 2006.
He served in the U.S. Army Air Corps from 1944 to 1946. He spent time overseas in China as a cryptographer and held the rank of Staff Sergeant upon his honorary discharge.
Ray worked in the financial departments for businesses such as; Ohio Fruit, Flickengers and P.A. Meyers and Sons, before becoming the owner of the Edinboro Western Auto Associate Store in 1963. In 1981 he moved on to selling life insurance for New York Life until his retirement in 1989.
Ray was a member of the Edinboro United Methodist Church, where he often served as an usher and a greeter. He served his community as a member of the Kiwanis Club of Edinboro, the H.G. Gillespie Foundation and on the Edinboro Cemetery Assoc. Board of Directors.
In his leisure time, Ray loved to bowl and play miniature golf.
Other than his parents and loving wife, Joanne, he was preceded in death by his brothers, James “Jim” and Robert “Bob” Zimmer and infant brother, William Donald Zimmer.
Survivors include his 3 children, Tom (Karen Hedderick) Zimmer of Edinboro, Judy Zimmer of Parksley, VA and Diane (Brett) Clark of Erie; five grandchildren, Jodie (Mo) Zimmer and Jaimie (Arlo) Zimmer, both of Loveland, CO, Clark “Matthew” (Anne) Deringer of Columbus, OH, Dr. Heather (Mark) Rudolph of N. Tonawanda, NY, and Logan (Jamie) Morris-Clark of Santa Monica, CA; 3 great-grandchildren, Gus, Addie and Moe Deringer; a sister, Berdena (Carl) Nelson, several nieces, nephews and a special friend, Jan Long.
Special thanks to his caregivers, Anita Volna, Fawn Brunot, Bonnie and Tom Staley, along with their daughters, Brooke and Abbie.
Friends may call at the Glunt Funeral Home and Crematory, Inc., 210 Erie Street, Edinboro, on Friday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. A service will be held there on Saturday at 11:00 a.m. with Rev. Lisa Grant officiating.
Burial will be in Edinboro Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Edinboro United Methodist Church, 113 High St., Edinboro, PA 16412.
