Beverly Janice Rouse Baker LaFollette, 91, of Erie, died Saturday, November 28, 2015, at Pleasant Ridge Manor West.
She was born at Millard Fillmore Hospital, Buffalo, NY, on 4-24-24, the first child of the late Earle Winslow Rouse and Caroline Bringleson Rouse.
Beverly graduated from Strong Vincent High School in 1942. Married Lincoln A. Baker at Moody Air Force Base in Valdosta, GA, in February, 1944. When her husband returned from the war, they had 5 children in 10 years. When the last child entered the first grade Beverly went to LPN school and later returned to school and became an RN. She worked at Hamot Hospital and Visiting Nurse Association in Erie and Corry, and prior to retirement at St. Mary's Home East.
She was a Girl Scout Leader for 12 years and was a lifetime member of the Girl Scouts of the U.S.A. Beverly played softball on a women's league, also competing for several years in the senior games including throwing the javelin. She was an active member of Mt. Calvary Lutheran Church.
She belonged to the Erie Runners Club, competed in the Quad Games and completed several marathons. At the age of 66, she read an article about the Appalachian Trail and hiked the 2,168.1 miles, finishing at age 80, the oldest female Section Hiker at that time. Her first born Bradley and last born Barbara each took a turn to accompany her towards the end.
In 1995 she was awarded the Senior Woman of the Year by the Women's Sports Foundation of Erie.
She loved the spoken English language and would correct anyone who used it incorrectly as her children and grandchildren will attest. She was a gifted seamstress, hand quilter and knitter, which she passed on to her daughters.
Survivors include 5 children, Bradley Lincoln Baker (Linda) of Bartlett, IL, Sherry Lynne Bufalino (R. Joseph) of Edinboro, Janice Carol Goodrich (Larry) of Marietta, GA, Neal Alan Baker (Pamela) of Erie, Barbara Elaine Baker (Stephen Semock) of Melrose, MA; a sister, Shirley Helen Laughlin, of Pleasant Ridge Manor, Fairview; and a sister-in-law, Dorothy Stelter Rouse, of Tijeras, NM; 12 grandchildren, Julia Ann DeHaven (Carl) of Springboro, OH, Chelsea Elizabeth Baker of Elgin, IL, Joseph Rosario Bufalino (Carrie Fitch) and Andrew Baker Bufalino (Sara Simmons) of Edinboro, Christopher Garrett Goodrich (Dr. Paige Brown) of Puerto Rico, Kyle Baker Goodrich and Eric Michael Goodrich of Atlanta, GA, Dylan Anthony Baker (Kristin) of Philadelphia, Taylor Kathryn Rogan (Chase) of Pittsburgh, Griffin Neal Baker of Phoenix, AZ, Ruby Lincoln Semock of Somerville, MA, and Anna Baker Semock of Melrose, MA; 5 great grandchildren, Sydney O'Neil and Lincoln Royce DeHaven, Macie Weber and Sophia Elizabeth Bufalino, Fitzgerald McNeal Rogan and many nieces and nephews.
Along with her parents she was preceded in death by her husbands Lincoln A. Baker and Robert LaFollette, a grandson, Lincoln Daniel Bufalino, and a brother, William Earle Rouse.
Friends may call at the Glunt Funeral Home and Crematory, Inc., 210 Erie Street, Edinboro, on Saturday, December 5, 2015, from 2 p.m. until the time of a short funeral service at 5 p.m. with Rev. Kristen Papson officiating.
Burial will be in Erie County Memorial Gardens at a later date.
