Betty Carlson Campazzi, 90, died suddenly, Thursday, February 3, 2011. She was the Mother of Dr. Earl Campazzi, Jr., founder and medical director of Island Medical Care in Palm Beach, FL.
Mrs. Campazzi was born in Erie, the daughter of Simon A. and Evelina (Lofgren) Carlson. She graduated from Strong Vincent High School.
Mrs. Campazzi of West Palm Beach, FL was a registered nurse and worked as a nurse educator and administrator. She earned her nursing degree from Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, MD. She assisted Dr. Alfred Blalock on surgery for the Blalock-Taussing shunt, used to treat heart with specific congenital malformations affecting the pumping of the blood.
Mrs. Campazzi lived in New York City where she met and married her husband, Earl J. Campazzi, Sr., who predeceased her.
She also earned a bachelor’s and a master’s degree in nursing from Columbia University, New York City. During her career she was Director of Nursing for Doctor’s Osteopathic Hospital at Metro Health Center in Erie. Mrs. Campazzi went on to earn her doctorate of education, also in nursing, from Columbia University, after which she joined the Joint Commission, an independent nonprofit organization that accredits 18,000 health-care organizations and programs in the United States.
In addition to her son, she is survived by her daughter-in-law, Julia Marie Campazzi of West Palm Beach. Mrs. Campazzi has one brother, Roy S. Carlson; a nephew, Dennis Carlson; and a niece, Jan Zeart all of Edinboro.
A memorial service was held at the Beach Club in Palm Beach, FL. Arrangements by Quattlebaum Funeral Home.
Burial was in Edinboro Cemetery. The Glunt Funeral Home, Edinboro, is in charge of local funeral arrangements.
